Mitochondrial Pseudogenes in the Nuclear Genomes of Drosophila

This paper is about the turnover of fragments of mitochondrial DNA which constantly integrate into nuclear genomes. It happens in all eukaryotes, and here we studied the process by comparing the pseudogene sequences (known as numts) in the Drosophila species. Since they’re good examples of nonfunctional sequence which are otherwise rare in Drosophila, we used them as models to understand the background processes of DNA rearrangement that occur in genomes.

Here for your enjoyment are three tunes which I’ve been playing with for around two years. I’ve had at least a couple of attempts at recording them before, but they always proved deceptively tricky. Especially the hand drum. I’ve never tried recording percussion before, but I had no idea how hard it would be to keep a basic rhythm. I lost count of the number of sneaky edits I had to make to those cajón tracks.

The piano parts were composed in Logic’s piano roll. One note at a time – setting the volume (“velocity”), length, damper / sustainer. Except for the grueling tedium I think the piano roll editor is surprisingly effective and easy to use, and a great way to come up with new ideas ‘on the fly’. It’s fascinating how you can evoke different sounds and styles by tiny variations in timing – playing before, on or after the beat. Originally I only expected to use piano for some harmony / texture, and then attempt some flash guitar solos, but since it worked well guitar is consigned just to background rhythm on each song.

The three songs are: 1) Photofinish, 2) Waterfall, 3) Skylights. It’s set to some clips from The Endless Summer (1966), a classic surf film with great atmosphere and music directed by Bruce Brown. If you would like to watch a film about surfing, watch this one, and then never watch any other.

These were done in April 2010.

The paintings and drawings are by Daliani Dixon.

Some more live improvisations from the greenhouse. These were recorded after Greenhouse v2 was born (new guitarist Reuben joined).

Some music from the band I started playing with ~3 months ago. These recordings are all off-the-cuff improvisations, most have three or four pieces stitched together from longer improvisations.

The Evolution of tRNA genes in Drosophila

Not quite complete, a mellow song I wrote with Steven Martin.

Music by Hubert Rogers & Steven Martin
Video: Jupiter and Beyond The Infinite, from 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Stanley Kubrick)

Two guitars improvising over an electronic/techno style backing track. Plenty of mistakes in the guitar lines, but also plenty of bits I really like and would struggle to replicate if I had to record a “cleaner” version.

Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon: Clone (2002) and Sixty-Six Steps (2005): less a review than an endorsement.

Recently I stumbled upon the fingerstyle guitar maestro Leo Kottke, and I soon learned that he made two albums in collaboration with Mike Gordon (bassist of Phish fame, the “cactus”) whose style I admire a lot and whose solo album The Green Sparrow (2008) has a few brilliant songs and is highly recommended.

Both albums have a fantastically playful and “breezy” vibe… it’s like lying in a hammock under a coconut tree (see Clone’s album cover). Mike’s compositions have his delightfully goofy style. Leo’s distinctive polyrhythmic fingerstyle technique fits perfectly. There’s plenty of banjo, mandolin and if you listen carefully you’ll hear lots of other peculiar percussive sounds in there besides. There are a few covers on Sixty-Six steps, including Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion and Phish’s Ya Mar. They’re not particularly interesting covers but the arrangements join the flow of the album perfectly.

I recommend both these CDs massively! Both Leo and Mike are top notch musicians, their output together basically consists of mainly upbeat, joyful and groovey largely acoustic- and instrumental-driven pieces. Many well known country/bluegrass/americana sounding chord progressions and tradition song structures serve as platforms for their own catchy and distinctive sounds.
